As I traveled the world with bands, I realized that I could design lighting that illuminates beautiful architecture and gardens

As I traveled the world with bands, I realized that I could design lighting that illuminates beautiful architecture and gardens. This revelation came to me gradually, as I spent countless nights setting up and programming complex lighting systems for concerts across different venues. First, I had to appreciate the soul of architectural features and garden and landscape designs, which meant developing a deeper understanding of how light interacts with different surfaces, textures, and natural elements. The more I started looking at these amazing spaces on my travels, from arboretums to old world architecture and art deco theatres, I saw many of these amazing buildings and garden areas illuminated in the evenings during my travels in European cities. The way light danced across historic facades, highlighted intricate architectural details, and brought gardens to life after sunset left an indelible impression on me. I decided that if I ever stopped touring with bands, I would look into designing and installing such beautiful soft lighting myself, combining my technical expertise with this newfound passion for architectural and landscape illumination.

In 2001, during a tour with the band 3 Doors Down, I had the opportunity to meet a gentleman who owned a company in California called Nightscaping when I was searching for landscape lighting for my own residence. Bill invited me to visit his factory on an off day, an invitation that would prove to be a pivotal moment in my professional journey. I spent 2 days learning about the nuances of low voltage landscape lighting, and as this was the old halogen days, there was a lot to learn, including voltage drop, proper planning, as well as fixture placements and lamp types. This intensive crash course opened my eyes to the technical complexities and artistic possibilities of landscape lighting, reinforcing my desire to eventually transition into this field.

Jump ahead to 2017 when I stopped touring and decided to open my landscape lighting firm in Raleigh, NC, and design and install outdoor lighting full time. This took a bit of planning, a website, and a few things, and Lite Visions Landscape Lighting Inc was officially opened in Raleigh, NC, in May 2018. The months leading up to the launch were filled with intensive preparation and market research. I did a lot of research in the Raleigh area to see lighting jobs and see what was wrong and right with the systems I saw installed. This hands-on investigation revealed both common mistakes and missed opportunities in existing installations. Coming from my stage and concert lighting background, I wanted to do it not only correctly, but also help my potential clients see the difference in what and why I designed my outdoor lighting systems the way I do, incorporating principles from my years of experience in entertainment lighting.

I went to a outdoor lighting conference and met who I felt were the top handful of outdoor landscape and architectural lighting designers in the USA. These industry leaders shared invaluable insights and experiences that helped shape my approach to landscape lighting. I felt fortunate to be entering the industry with my background as a stage lighting technician and designer, and those people helped me to see that it would indeed give me a niche with my landscape lighting clients in the Raleigh, NC area. The conference proved to be an incredible networking opportunity. It was so amazing to spend a few days and learn from the best in the industry, and I was so humbled that they all told me to call if I ever needed any advice down the road. Their generosity in sharing knowledge and offering ongoing support was truly remarkable. I received a wealth of information from them and soon had landscape lighting manufacturers contacting me about possibly using their products, recognizing the unique perspective I brought to the field.

After careful consideration and testing many products, I narrowed it down to a few of the best fixtures, connectors, and cable available to the professional landscape lighting industry. This selection process involved rigorous testing and evaluation to ensure only the highest quality materials would be used in my installations. I am so fortunate to have clients who appreciate my lighting skills in the Raleigh and Eastern NC areas. My unique approach sets me apart: I look at architectural features and gardens and landscapes differently than others and view the depth and dimensions when looking at a potential lighting project. I see things differently and look at the entire scene to create not only a stunning scene when the clients drive up to their residence in the evenings, but also to create little vignettes through windows and views from their home offices, kitchens, dens, bedrooms, and patios.

Painting relaxing scenes with soft low-level lighting for the clients to enjoy from many different viewpoints has become my signature style. Sometimes using foliage and plants to create purposeful shadowing, as well as downlighting to create shadows and pools of soft illumination to navigate garden pathways in the moonlight, I craft lighting designs that transform outdoor spaces into enchanting nighttime environments.

Artist Definition

Artist,Definition :Someone who has creative skills and is able to see and create things others can not even imagine could be there.Weather on a stage setting or on a beautiful property or a homes architectural features. As an artist who patients with illumination,I look at the big picture of creating a painting with light that can be viewed from different angles as well as from inside looking out the window.

artist definition: someone who sees things that aren't yet theremagical outdoor landscape lighting

creating a safe walkway with landscape lighting
Less lumens is usually more with landscape lighting
Sometimes it’s hard to convince a person more than one light fixture per object might be needed to create the magic. They only know what they have seen prior, weather it was right or wrong.
Imagine telling an artist painting a beautiful photo to use less colors or brushstrokes.
Thankfully most of our clients understand what we do and usually give us free reign to create our art with illumination.
Using more fixtures on a tree or other object gives us the artistic freedom to properly illuminate it from all sides and create a lower lumen level and equally allow it to be viewed 3 dimensional, not just one sided.
The world is not flat and neither should your landscape lighting be flat and one sided.

less lumens is sometimes more

Less lumens is more when designing and creating ambiance and atmosphere with landscape lighting.

LED technology and internal control of dimming and lighting output has put a great tool into the hands of lighting designers.

Properly designed and installed outdoor landscape lighting not only increases your safety and security around your property,it also helps your emotional well being by helping you relax and enjoy your outdoor spaces as it creates a welcoming atmosphere.

As a lighting designer sometimes we sometimes must use more fixtures to properly illuminate an object ,think of a painting with many brushstrokes and that is how a good lighting designer accomplishes his task. This performed with very low lumens on the fixtures creates a magical nighttime space for you to relax and enjoy.

While there are other companies who install one fixture here and there with no rhyme or reason except they attended a short lighting seminar to increase profits. Our world is not one dimensional and no ones home or property should be lit up one sided.

Proper outdoor landscape lighting not only affects a person’s senses, but by creating a peaceful relaxing environment by using imagination and vision, helps the person to relax and enjoy their outdoor space into the evening hours.

Add concert quality audio and sit back and imagine the symphony playing in your own space with the relaxing outdoor illumination as you drink a glass of wine and forget about the days problems.

Contact us today to come home to a peaceful and relaxing custom designed outdoor space of your own.

landscape lighting VS magical landscape lighting

I get a few phone calls weekly that start out like this,I have a 1-3 year old lighting system and it just doesn’t look like some I have seen. Can you stop by and take a look at it. They have just ok landscape lighting VS magical landscape lighting .Whomever installed their lighting gave them a very basic install and probably did not even come back to do a night time lighting focus. I usually set up a time to stop by and see what their outdoor landscape lighting looks like and setup a time to stop back another evening and do a nighttime demonstration of what their outdoor landscape lighting could look like. Coming from my many years of working on concert and theatrical lighting I see things in a very different perspective. I work to create depth, definition as well as layers to give a property a magical nighttime lighting effect. I actually have lighting vendors who have seen my work and send me samples of their products.

Lite Visions is not your typical cookie cutter outdoor landscape lighting designer,if you want your property to look like a resort oasis in the evening hours call us today.

From lighting up the stars to lighting under the Stars

Lite Visions Landscape Lighting is not your average run of the mill lighting designer. Joe has went From lighting up the stars to lighting under the Stars.

Light Visions has over 35 years in the live entertainment industry ,working on many different types of projects from helping to illuminate a symphony to the Christmas sensation the Trans Siberian Orchestra.

We use many of the same theatrical techniques to create a beautiful, yet very softly illuminated scene for your property that creates a beautiful backdrop for you to enjoy in the evening hours. Lite Visions Landscape Lighting takes pride in our custom lighting design work and while we primarily work in the Raleigh NC area,we have illuminated clients homes from the coast to the mountains and even as far away as Las Vegas.

Unfortunately, many people in our industry do simple cookie cutter jobs that a lighting rep showed them how to do.That usually means lighting one thing with one fixture one sided with no knowledge of lamp types ,shielding the light or any real design other than sticking a fixture in the ground.

We are very proud to be chosen by Coastal Source to be an installer for their concert quality outdoor audio systems in 2022.

Concert and Theatrical Lighting Background Touring over 30 years

Lite Visions Landscape Lighting’s owner Joe comes from a concert and theatrical lighting background and will use a few of those lighting techniques to make your home and property into a night time resort oasis. Lite Visions landscape lighting uses only the best lighting fixtures and equipment available to the professional. Joe looks at things in a more artistic manner and lights things up as your eye sees them ,not flat and one sided as many people who install landscape lighting in the area seem to do ,we see quite a few bad lighting jobs driving out of neighborhoods in the evenings when leaving clients homes. Many installers seem to think more lumens is better on a lot of things they light and this is not usually the case with landscape lighting. Most times less lumens is more with a properly shielded lamp source to hide the light from view when walking past.

A recent 5 star google review: Joe is an artist whose palette is light! He replaced our “standard” (mediocre) driveway path lights with downlight strategically located in trees resulting in a dreamy, soft-lit approach to our house. Next he is designing the lighting for Phase II of our landscaping project…lighting our front entry and parking area. The results speak to Joe’s excellence and professionalism!

EXHIBITOR SPOTLIGHT: LITE VISIONS LANDSCAPE LIGHTING

Dec 23, 2019, 16:11 PM

We’re excited to announce that Lite Visions Landscape Lighting Inc is a sponsor of the 2020 Downtown Raleigh Home Show, happening January 24-26, 2020 at the Raleigh Convention Center. You can find this innovative landscape lighting company at booth #1132 at the show. Before you visit them, enjoy our brief interview with Joseph Yanulevich.

What are your best home or garden tips for this season?

Make sure if you hire an outdoor landscape lighting designer that they are not using cheap Chinese lighting fixtures or low-quality transformers that you yourself can buy online or at a big box store. I have replaced several of these lighting installations and some of the fixtures were falling apart.

What are your featured items this season? (sales, popular services, show specials, etc.)

The most popular item is our FREE annual maintenance contact, where we come out and re-adjust your lighting if needed as well as cleaning fixtures and checking timers. We also give a 3-year guarantee on our installations above and beyond any manufacturer warranty. No One else will give you that kind of guarantee.

What are your home or garden pet peeves?

Bad outdoor lighting, I recently did a beautiful new home in Hastentree in Wake Forest. The couple asked to drive thru the neighborhood and look at the lighting they liked. After riding thru and looking with them I can’t believe how many bad lighting designs we all saw. Lighting design is about proper knowledge of color temperature as well as beam spreads and wattage. There is nothing that looks worse than a beautiful crepe myrtle lit with a too-white light making it look unnatural. Also, wasting lighting on such trees as pine trees.

What is the strangest client request you’ve ever received?

Probably the email from a person requesting me to install a cheap Chinese fixture package that they bought themselves online.I would never do that because I have to stand behind my work for a long time. Lite Visions does not cut corners on installations or use inferior lighting equipment.

Any additional company info you’d like to include?

Lite Visions’ owner, Joe has over 35 years of experience as a lighting technician and lighting designer. Joe has worked with many bands and concert acts over the years from starting his career with local NC music favorites The Embers and Nantucket to working with Tim Mcgraw, and Alan Jackson. Joe’s name is in Alan’s Who I am CD to the Christmas sensation the Trans Siberian Orchestra who awarded Joe a Platinum album award for his help on their first couple of tours. Joe looks at each individual project as it was his own property and designs something specifically for that property, No cookie-cutter designs. Joe and Lite Visions as his many 5-star reviews on google say, is the only choice for distinctive landscape lighting in the Raleigh area. I look at my customers as members of my family, we are not just installing lights and walking away. We are creating a relationship for years to come from coming back and readjusting fixtures as plants grow to do an annual maintenance checkup. We want your lights to keep looking like the day we installed them. We get so many word-of-mouth referrals and even have some customers invite friends over to see their lighting the first night we turn them on. We are a member of the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals. Please check out our google reviews.

Outdoor Landscape lighting is the ideal way to add drama, beauty and allure to your homes exterior in the evening.

. Here are a few outdoor landscape lighting techniques we use at Lite Visions Landscape Lighting for developing distinctive and functional designs to put your property in the best light when the sun sets.

Up Lighting Example

Up-Lighting – Offering a greater contrast effect than typical wall-washing with floodlights, Lighting fixtures are placed closer to a building for a bolder effect. The goal is to focus guest’s attention to the most beautiful or intriguing parts of your landscape. This may relate to the architectural features of your home or, features in the landscape such as trees, statues, or fountains.

Silhouetting – By placing a fixture behind the feature, aimed towards an adjacent wall, you can create an illuminated backdrop. This landscape lighting technique creates intrigue by using lighting to make interesting outlines or profiles of features. Similar to up-lighting, spotlights and well lights work best to create these dramatic shapes.

Shadowing – A similar technique to silhouetting, shadowing also places the fixture towards the base of the feature, aimed towards an adjacent wall. However, the goal is to create a softer shadow, and often works best with a tree that has open, delicate foliage. The effect of the tree’s movement in the wind is sure to add drama to any home facade. Spotlights, well lights, and floodlights can help you achieve this effect.

Moonlighting – Create moonlighting techniques by placing a downlight fixture with a full glare guard high up inside a tree and angled downwards. This effect looks like moonlight shining down through the branches. It causes attractive shadow patterns on the ground to appear, plus it provides a very natural and beautiful lighting effect. This effect works best with open-branched trees.

Downlighting – The down-lighting technique is similar to the moonlighting technique, although brighter and less subtle. Place a fixture high up, inside a feature like a trellis, tree, or eave, and cast downwards over a large area. Place the light higher if you intend to illuminate a large portion of the yard, and lower if you wish to illuminate a path or garden.
