Joe is a Creative Lighting Designer, Not Just a Technician

He also added a rose filter to the Japanese Maple light to enhance the color and diffusion filters to reduce glare. We got to hear amazing stories from his concert days too! And for the same price as the competition, we got a wide variety of lights perfectly suited to the project, excellent service, and the assurance that the lights will not suddenly stop working due to a poor install.

We are beyond impressed with the work that Joe and Lite Visions did on our front yard landscape lighting! It was desperately in need of replacing and now looks absolutely fabulous. Joe is an expert in his field and offers so much more than your standard landscape lighting. With over 30 years of lighting experience as both a lighting technician and lighting designer and spot operator with concerts and local shows. When Raleigh native Joe decided to retire from the road and traveling 10 months out of the year he chose to stay in a field he was familiar with, Lighting design.

I got so much experience touring by working hard and asking questions of people I looked up to. From TV and Video shoots to Broadway theatre and Live concerts, operating spotlights or lighting for an opening band I was a sponge, always asking why and trying different versions of what I saw.
After much research and a few years’ worth of meeting with people who were the top outdoor lighting designers in the world and looking at and researching products, Joe in 2018 opened his outdoor lighting design and installation company Lite Visions Landscape Lighting.
30 years of lighting experience
With a huge passion for lighting design and creativity, Joe sees things differently thru his outdoor lighting designs. I see a lot of not great lighting installations and have even walked or driven thru neighborhoods with potential clients to educate them as to the difference by asking what they see and what they liked or disliked before showing my thoughts for their project.
Many outdoor lighting people simply sell a cookie cutter type product, lighting a few trees with a single lighting fixture sometimes way too brightly.
By properly lighting a similar tree with several lights properly placed and even one or two perhaps up in the tree my clients are usually blown away by how different that looks including the fact they can view that tree from inside their residence.

We do one thing and excel at it, Landscape Lighting. Do you believe one person can do 5-7 things and be and excel at all those things?  Hardscapes, Landscapes, Mulch, Ponds, Fences, Tree Trimming, oh and we can also do lighting, lol. I see trucks in Luxury neighborhoods daily when out working and laugh to myself, because I see what those guys are installing.

They find the cheapest thinnest fixtures they can purchase,bulbs included and install them for the low price they add onto the 15-30,000 hardscape or landscape project they installed. Sad thing is that the client will have no idea until they are long gone and the year warranty is long gone as well. Some lighting manufacture had them attend a half day class and they are suddenly lighting experts.

Professional landscape lighting involves a well thought out design that the clients can look out of their home and enjoy as well as the lighting can be viewed by neighbors riding by. I have to educate clients every day of the week as to proper landscape lighting designs as so many of these companies stick one light on one tree that is not a good tree to be illuminated.

Trees that look magical at night when illuminated properly with landscape lighting are Crepe Myrtles, Japanese Maples, River Birches, Dogwoods. Most builder trees are not trees that look at all good lit up. Architectural aspects of the home when properly illuminated should be softly illuminated between brick or stone facades and not have lights placed directly under windows which can create a hot spot and a ghoulish effect.

 

I come from a concert and theatrical stage lighting background and see so many horrible lighting jobs that clients paid good money for. It only takes a few minutes of walking or riding around looking at such jobs to make most clients realize the bad lighting that is all around them, including two new things builders are guilty of. permanent holiday lighting and soffit lighting in the homes peaks which creates bright hot spots with horrible glare at night.

You paid alot of money for your forever home and landscaping and you need to educate yourself on the differences in not good and good lighting.

Yes, you can go with the low price leader for any type of home improvements, but I get the phone calls when those systems that are not wired properly or put together cheaply fail and we ,as most companies don’t work on those type systems as its usually just a band aid till the next failure happens.

Value vs low price=  quality small company who does one thing and does it correctly vs a company doing quantity installs for a quick buck to add onto their other project they made their profit on.

Joe did a great job of lighting our house. He’s very nice, talented, and shows up when he says he will. I wanted the lights to accentuate house, not so lit up that it’s like a runway. Because he has a background with doing lighting for concerts, he knew where to place the light for best results, not just randomly placing them anywhere. After driving around neighborhood, our lighting is also ‘softer’ – not so bright and definitely not as white. You don’t think too much about that (at least I didn’t), until you look at everyone else’s. Personally, I think ours look better. It’s nice because he’s the owner and installer.

By the end of that consultation, which lasted a couple of hours, we pretty much decided to give Joe carte blanche to do a complete and total reset, so confident were we in the vision he had for our property – and we are so glad that we did. Joe does the best Landscape lighting in the area! From his music touring days and professional lighting experience he knows the ins and outs of the lighting systems he is installing. I had several quotes from other companies which were more expensive and not as detail oriented as Joe. Joe knows how to add just the right amount of light for the project and has the artistic eye for the best placement. He is honest and will not try to “sell” you on more fixtures. He did a Demo light set up which was invaluable!!!! Joe did an amazing job with the landscape lighting in our backyard. He is an expert at what he does and offered lighting ideas that completely changed the look and feel of our yard.

Softly Lit Courtyard

This was a very small softly lit courtyard I had the challenge to re Illuminate after the old halogen landscape lighting system had stopped working. As I traveled the world with bands, I realized that I could design outdoor lighting that illuminates beautiful architecture and gardens. This revelation came to me gradually, as I spent countless nights setting up and programming complex lighting systems for concerts across different venues. First, I had to appreciate the soul of architectural features and garden and landscape designs, which meant developing a deeper understanding of how light interacts with different surfaces, textures, and natural elements. The more I started looking at these amazing spaces on my travels, from arboretums to old world architecture and art deco theatres, I saw many of these amazing buildings and garden areas illuminated in the evenings during my travels in European cities. The way light danced across historic facades, highlighted intricate architectural details, and brought gardens to life after sunset left an indelible impression on me. I decided that if I ever stopped touring with bands, I would look into designing and installing such beautiful soft lighting myself, combining my technical expertise with this newfound passion for architectural and landscape illumination.

In 2001, during a tour with the band 3 Doors Down, I had the opportunity to meet a gentleman who owned a company in California called Nightscaping when I was searching for landscape lighting for my own residence. Bill invited me to visit his factory on an off day, an invitation that would prove to be a pivotal moment in my professional journey. I spent 2 days learning about the nuances of low voltage landscape lighting, and as this was the old halogen days, there was a lot to learn, including voltage drop, proper planning, as well as fixture placements and lamp types. This intensive crash course opened my eyes to the technical complexities and artistic possibilities of landscape lighting, reinforcing my desire to eventually transition into this field.

Jump ahead to 2017 when I stopped touring and decided to open my landscape lighting firm in Raleigh, NC, and design and install outdoor lighting full time. This took a bit of planning, a website, and a few things, and Lite Visions Landscape Lighting Inc was officially opened in Raleigh, NC, in May 2018. The months leading up to the launch were filled with intensive preparation and market research. I did a lot of research in the Raleigh area to see lighting jobs and see what was wrong and right with the systems I saw installed. This hands-on investigation revealed both common mistakes and missed opportunities in existing installations. Coming from my stage and concert lighting background, I wanted to do it not only correctly, but also help my potential clients see the difference in what and why I designed my outdoor lighting systems the way I do, incorporating principles from my years of experience in entertainment lighting.

I went to a outdoor lighting conference and met who I felt were the top handful of outdoor landscape and architectural lighting designers in the USA. These industry leaders shared invaluable insights and experiences that helped shape my approach to landscape lighting. I felt fortunate to be entering the industry with my background as a stage lighting technician and designer, and those people helped me to see that it would indeed give me a niche with my landscape lighting clients in the Raleigh, NC area. The conference proved to be an incredible networking opportunity. It was so amazing to spend a few days and learn from the best in the industry, and I was so humbled that they all told me to call if I ever needed any advice down the road. Their generosity in sharing knowledge and offering ongoing support was truly remarkable. I received a wealth of information from them and soon had landscape lighting manufacturers contacting me about possibly using their products, recognizing the unique perspective I brought to the field.

After careful consideration and testing many products, I narrowed it down to a few of the best fixtures, connectors, and cable available to the professional landscape lighting industry. This selection process involved rigorous testing and evaluation to ensure only the highest quality materials would be used in my installations. I am so fortunate to have clients who appreciate my lighting skills in the Raleigh and Eastern NC areas. My unique approach sets me apart: I look at architectural features and gardens and landscapes differently than others and view the depth and dimensions when looking at a potential lighting project. I see things differently and look at the entire scene to create not only a stunning scene when the clients drive up to their residence in the evenings, but also to create little vignettes through windows and views from their home offices, kitchens, dens, bedrooms, and patios.

Painting relaxing scenes with soft low-level lighting for the clients to enjoy from many different viewpoints has become my signature style. Sometimes using foliage and plants to create purposeful shadowing, as well as downlighting to create shadows and pools of soft illumination to navigate garden pathways in the moonlight, I craft lighting designs that transform outdoor spaces into enchanting nighttime environments.
