Bringing Theatrical Stage Lighting to Your Outdoor Spaces: The Artistic Vision behind Lite Visions Landscape Lighting

From Stage to Garden: A Lighting Designer’s Journey

After more than 35 years lighting up theatrical and concert stages for world-renowned musicians and theatrical productions, I—Joe Yanulevich, owner of LITE VISIONS Landscape Lighting—decided to bring that same artistry to outdoor spaces. Today, I design and install bespoke landscape lighting systems that turn gardens, homes, and waterfront properties into living works of art after sunset.

Where others see fixtures and bulbs, I see light as a brushstroke—a way to create ambience, evoke emotion, and reveal beauty in the natural and built environments.

What Sets LITE VISIONS Apart

At LITE VISIONS, we don’t follow lighting trends. We set a higher standard.

Unlike many franchise companies or seasonal installers, I’m not simply placing lights in the ground. I use precision lighting techniques, learned from decades in concert production, to carefully sculpt each space. My lighting designs are soft, elegant, and never overdone—prioritizing reflections, shadow play, and architectural balance.

Each project is personally designed and installed by me, not handed off to a crew. That’s how I ensure the quality, artistry, and attention to detail that my clients expect.

Serving the Best of North Carolina: From Raleigh to the Crystal Coast

Whether you live in Raleigh, Wake Forest, Cary, or Durham, or you have a waterfront estate in New Bern, Moorhead City, or Atlantic Beach, I tailor every lighting plan to your property’s natural features and your lifestyle.

Some of the areas I serve include:

  • Raleigh – Durham – Chapel Hill
  • Wake Forest – North Raleigh – Olde Raleigh-Hasentree
  • Cary – Preston – McGregor Downs
  • New Bern – River Dunes – Oriental-Trent Woods
  • Moorhead City – Beaufort – Emerald Isle – Swansboro
  • Falls Lake – Kerr Lake – Lake Gaston – Hyco Lake

If your home includes a dock, koi pond, garden path, or a grand live oak tree, I’ll bring it to life with soft, low-voltage lighting that respects the environment while maximizing visual appeal.

A Focus on Quality, Safety, and Atmosphere

My approach is not just artistic—it’s intentional. I use dark sky-friendly techniques, low-lumen fixtures, and carefully positioned downlighting to reduce glare and protect your night skies.

Many clients come to me after seeing other jobs in their neighborhoods that are overlit or harsh. They appreciate that my lighting is subtle, romantic, and functional, creating a welcoming environment without looking commercial or cookie-cutter.

Great Landscape Lighting Requires Darkness: The Secret Most Homeowners Miss

One of the biggest misconceptions about landscape lighting in Raleigh NC is that more light makes a home look better.

In reality, the opposite is true.

Great landscape lighting requires darkness.

Without darkness, there is no contrast. Without contrast, there is no depth. And without depth, even the most expensive home can look flat and uninviting at night.

Why Darkness Is Essential in Landscape Lighting

Darkness is not the absence of design—it is part of the design.

When everything is lit, nothing stands out. The eye has nowhere to go, and the entire property blends together into one evenly lit scene.

But when lighting is used selectively, something very different happens.

The eye moves naturally from one focal point to another. Trees, architectural elements, and landscape features begin to separate visually, creating layers and depth.

This is what transforms outdoor lighting from basic visibility into something truly beautiful.

Landscape Lighting in Raleigh NC Should Be Composed, Not Flooded

Many outdoor lighting systems rely on brightness to create impact. Flooding a home with light may make everything visible, but it eliminates mood and subtlety.

Professional landscape lighting in Raleigh NC takes a different approach.

It focuses on:

  • Selective illumination of key features
  • Intentional shadow and contrast
  • Lower, controlled light levels
  • Allowing darkness to exist between focal points
a stunning fig tree softly illuminated at the end of an arched pathway with a seating bench

This balance between light and dark is what creates atmosphere.

The Role of Shadows in Outdoor Lighting

Shadows are just as important as light.

They add dimension, texture, and visual interest. Without shadows, everything appears flat and one-dimensional.

By carefully placing and aiming fixtures, shadows can be used to enhance trees, highlight architectural details, and create a more dynamic nighttime environment.

This is one of the key differences between basic installation and true lighting design.

Why Less Light Often Creates a Better Result

One of the most surprising things for homeowners is how little light is actually needed to achieve a dramatic result.

Lower light levels create a softer, more refined look. They reduce glare, preserve the natural character of the home, and make outdoor spaces feel more inviting.

This is especially important in higher-end neighborhoods throughout Raleigh, Wake Forest, and Falls Lake, where lighting should complement the home—not overpower it.

Landscape Lighting Should Feel Natural

At LITE VISIONS, lighting is approached as a composition, not just a system of fixtures.

The goal is to create a natural, balanced look that feels effortless—even though it is carefully designed.

This philosophy is one reason LITE VISIONS was featured in Masters of Landscape Lighting, a recognition that reflects a design-first approach built on restraint, contrast, and artistic vision.

Landscape Lighting in Raleigh NC Done Right

Great landscape lighting in Raleigh NC is not about making everything brighter. It is about creating a balance between light and darkness.

When done correctly, a home does not just become more visible at night—it becomes more beautiful, more inviting, and more engaging.

If your outdoor lighting feels too bright, too flat, or lacks atmosphere, it may be time to rethink the design.

LITE VISIONS provides artistic landscape lighting design throughout Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Wake Forest, and surrounding areas.

Some homeowners don’t realize they have bad lighting until they see what good lighting looks like.

Why Most Landscape Lighting in Raleigh Looks Flat (And How to Fix It)

Most landscape lighting in Raleigh NC looks flat.

Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

A single light pointed straight up at a tree. A harsh beam hitting the front of a home. Everything is visible, but nothing stands out. There is no depth, no mood, and no sense of composition.

It is one of the most common problems in outdoor lighting, and it happens all over Raleigh, Wake Forest, Falls Lake, and surrounding areas.

Why So Much Landscape Lighting Looks Flat

The problem is usually not the fixture itself. The problem is how the lighting is designed and aimed.

Many systems are installed with a very simple formula:

  • One light per tree
  • One angle per feature
  • Brightness used as a substitute for design

The result is predictable. The tree, wall, or column is illuminated, but it has no life to it. Instead of creating dimension, the lighting makes everything look one-dimensional.

That is the difference between basic installation and true landscape lighting design.

Professional Landscape Lighting in Raleigh NC Is Layered

Great landscape lighting in Raleigh NC is not about blasting a feature with as much light as possible. It is about creating layers.

That often means using:

  • Multiple fixtures on important focal points
  • Different beam spreads for different effects
  • Lower lumen levels for a softer, more natural look
  • Careful aiming to control glare and direct the eye

Layered lighting creates contrast. Contrast creates depth. And depth is what makes a home or landscape feel rich, elegant, and inviting at night.

Why Brighter Usually Makes Outdoor Lighting Worse

One of the biggest misconceptions in outdoor lighting is that brighter is better.

In reality, brighter often makes everything worse. Too much light flattens textures, destroys shadows, and makes a home feel harsh instead of welcoming.

Beautiful outdoor lighting depends on restraint. It depends on knowing what to reveal, what to soften, and what to leave in darkness so the eye can move naturally through the scene.

That is especially important on higher-end homes, where the lighting should feel composed and architectural rather than loud and obvious.

How to Fix Flat Landscape Lighting

If your current landscape lighting feels flat, the answer is not always more fixtures. Very often, the answer is better design.

Improving flat outdoor lighting may include:

  • Repositioning fixtures to create better angles
  • Reducing brightness to eliminate glare
  • Adding a second or third layer where depth is needed
  • Highlighting selected features instead of trying to light everything

Small changes in placement and intensity can make a dramatic difference in how your property looks after dark.

Landscape Lighting Should Create Atmosphere

At LITE VISIONS, every project is approached as a composition, not just an installation.

Courtyard and water feature lighting

The goal is not simply to make a property visible. The goal is to create atmosphere, depth, and a feeling that draws you in.

That philosophy is one reason LITE VISIONS was featured in Masters of Landscape Lighting, a recognition that reflects a design-first approach rather than a fixture-first approach.

Landscape Lighting in Raleigh NC Done Right

Professional landscape lighting in Raleigh NC should never feel flat, harsh, or overly bright. It should feel intentional.

With layered lighting, low-glare techniques, and a trained eye for contrast, a home can be transformed into something completely different at night.

Some homeowners don’t realize they have bad lighting until they see what good lighting looks like.

As I traveled the world with bands, I realized that I could design outdoor lighting that illuminates beautiful architecture and gardens.

As I traveled the world with bands, I realized that I could design outdoor lighting that illuminates beautiful architecture and gardens. This revelation came to me gradually, as I spent countless nights setting up and programming complex lighting systems for concerts across different venues. First, I had to appreciate the soul of architectural features and garden and landscape designs, which meant developing a deeper understanding of how light interacts with different surfaces, textures, and natural elements. The more I started looking at these amazing spaces on my travels, from arboretums to old world architecture and art deco theatres, I saw many of these amazing buildings and garden areas illuminated in the evenings during my travels in European cities. The way light danced across historic facades, highlighted intricate architectural details, and brought gardens to life after sunset left an indelible impression on me. I decided that if I ever stopped touring with bands, I would look into designing and installing such beautiful soft lighting myself, combining my technical expertise with this newfound passion for architectural and landscape illumination.

In 2001, during a tour with the band 3 Doors Down, I had the opportunity to meet a gentleman who owned a company in California called Nightscaping when I was searching for landscape lighting for my own residence. Bill invited me to visit his factory on an off day, an invitation that would prove to be a pivotal moment in my professional journey. I spent 2 days learning about the nuances of low voltage landscape lighting, and as this was the old halogen days, there was a lot to learn, including voltage drop, proper planning, as well as fixture placements and lamp types. This intensive crash course opened my eyes to the technical complexities and artistic possibilities of landscape lighting, reinforcing my desire to eventually transition into this field.

As I traveled the world with bands

Jump ahead to 2017 when I stopped touring and decided to open my landscape lighting firm in Raleigh, NC, and design and install outdoor lighting full time. This took a bit of planning, a website, and a few things, and Lite Visions Landscape Lighting Inc was officially opened in Raleigh, NC, in May 2018. The months leading up to the launch were filled with intensive preparation and market research. I did a lot of research in the Raleigh area to see lighting jobs and see what was wrong and right with the systems I saw installed. This hands-on investigation revealed both common mistakes and missed opportunities in existing installations. Coming from my stage and concert lighting background, I wanted to do it not only correctly, but also help my potential clients see the difference in what and why I designed my outdoor lighting systems the way I do, incorporating principles from my years of experience in entertainment lighting.

I went to a outdoor lighting conference and met who I felt were the top handful of outdoor landscape and architectural lighting designers in the USA. These industry leaders shared invaluable insights and experiences that helped shape my approach to landscape lighting. I felt fortunate to be entering the industry with my background as a stage lighting technician and designer, and those people helped me to see that it would indeed give me a niche with my landscape lighting clients in the Raleigh, NC area. The conference proved to be an incredible networking opportunity. It was so amazing to spend a few days and learn from the best in the industry, and I was so humbled that they all told me to call if I ever needed any advice down the road. Their generosity in sharing knowledge and offering ongoing support was truly remarkable. I received a wealth of information from them and soon had landscape lighting manufacturers contacting me about possibly using their products, recognizing the unique perspective I brought to the field.

After careful consideration and testing many products, I narrowed it down to a few of the best fixtures, connectors, and cable available to the professional landscape lighting industry. This selection process involved rigorous testing and evaluation to ensure only the highest quality materials would be used in my installations. I am so fortunate to have clients who appreciate my lighting skills in the Raleigh and Eastern NC areas. My unique approach sets me apart: I look at architectural features and gardens and landscapes differently than others and view the depth and dimensions when looking at a potential lighting project. I see things differently and look at the entire scene to create not only a stunning scene when the clients drive up to their residence in the evenings, but also to create little vignettes through windows and views from their home offices, kitchens, dens, bedrooms, and patios.

Painting relaxing scenes with soft low-level lighting for the clients to enjoy from many different viewpoints has become my signature style. Sometimes using foliage and plants to create purposeful shadowing, as well as downlighting to create shadows and pools of soft illumination to navigate garden pathways in the moonlight, I craft lighting designs that transform outdoor spaces into enchanting nighttime environments.

The transformers and cable are rated the best available to give our clients peace of mind knowing their outdoor landscape lighting system will not have call backs due to problems

When Joe retired and came off the touring road a few years ago, he visited with some out of state contractors and several different lighting manufactures to find the best installation methods and equipment available for his clients.

Lite Visions is a genuine small business that considers our clients as members of our family and we truly enjoy creating an outdoor oasis for your family to enjoy.

Outdoor Landscape Lighting design and installation is our only business and not simply a sideline or a outdoor lighting franchise. Most of our happy outdoor landscape lighting clients come from previous lighting customer referrals.

Retrofitting landscape lighting systems with energy saving LED Lamps.

There are many old halogen systems that are in need of a landscape lighting led retrofit. A lot of these outdoor lighting systems are in dire need of maintenance from having the wrong color temperature bulbs that either the homeowner or someone else installed to just some of the lights not working at all to the lights are just falling apart or have bad/old wiring to the plant material being 3 times larger and way outgrown the original lighting plan. I see this in the evenings when I ride thru some of the older neighborhoods like Wakefield, Bedford,Weston,Preston when leaving a new outdoor lighting installation and driving the the neighborhoods at night. These things happened over a long time due to either poor maintenance or lack of any maintenance. Maintenance on the outdoor landscape lighting would have included re-positioning lights as plants grew along with cleaning fixtures and checking lights and timers bi annually to keep your outdoor landscape lighting looking like new always. Contact Lite Visions today to get your old outdoor lighting system looking like new once again.

unique nighttime ambiance and beauty

You have waited a long time to find and enjoy your forever home, with it’s own unique ambiance and beauty and stunning landscape with all the things you could imagine. Lite Visions can design and implement such a plan.

Discover your resort oasis in your own backyard with professionally designed and installed outdoor landscape lighting by a former concert and stage lighting designer.

Joe is a local longtime Raleigh native, homeowner and former concert and stage lighting designer and has been sharing that knowledge to properties in the Raleigh,Wake Forest and North Carolina areas for the last five years.

As an actual lighting designer who has driven out of many neighborhoods in the evening hours after installing lighting and seeing many poorly designed lighting installations, Joe wants to help homeowners understand the difference in people who might just light an object with only one fixture when it might require more lights at less lumens to properly illuminate the object.

Picasso would use many brush strokes to paint a masterpiece and proper landscape illumination many times requires more than just one brush stroke up the center of a huge tree.

A lot of companies might put a fixture too close to a trees trunk or too close to a homes foundation and use a lamp that is too bright and instead of the light looking nice and soft you can see a very noticeable hot spot near where the light starts.

Call Lite Visions Landscape Lighting today to see your property at night looking like the amazing work of art you see in the daytime.

Softly Lit Courtyard

This was a very small softly lit courtyard I had the challenge to re Illuminate after the old halogen landscape lighting system had stopped working. My favorite focus items were the water feature and the courtyard entrance. This was all done with very soft illumination. When Lite Visions Landscape Lighting’s owner Joe decided to go from lighting up the stars to lighting under the stars in Raleigh NC ,he knew lighting would be his only focus. As a former lighting designer and lighting technician for bands since he turned 18,Joe searched out the best professional grade landscape lighting fixtures to install at his clients homes and gardens. I wanted to give my clients the best possible value for their money. Landscape lighting ,when designed properly has the ability to change and enhance your outdoor landscaping completely. Lite Visions landscape lighting is an artistically based design company and we might take more time and perhaps a few visits to make certain to visualize all the options for each clients unique situation. Less lumens is usually more with landscape lighting
Sometimes it’s hard to convince a person more than one light fixture per object might be needed to create the magic. They only know what they have seen prior, weather it was right or wrong.
Imagine telling an artist painting a beautiful photo to use less colors or brushstrokes.
Thankfully most of our clients understand what we do and usually give us free reign to create our art with illumination.
Using more fixtures on a tree or other object gives us the artistic freedom to properly illuminate it from all sides and create a lower lumen level and equally allow it to be viewed 3 dimensional, not just one sided.
The world is not flat and neither should your landscape lighting be flat and one sided.
