In July this year Lite Visions won several award winning lighting designs when we attended the annual Sterling landscape lighting summit in Danville Virginia. We learned about new products to incorporate into our eye catching landscape lighting designs that elevate our clients property and also in our lighting design challenge we got to put them to use over a three day period. Janet Lennox Moyer a renowned lighting designer and Eleftheria Deko, who has won many many awards for her stunning lighting designs https://edeko.gr/  Eleftheria lit the Olympics in Greece as well as the Acropolis and many other lighting design projects and her and Jan were the judges for our landscape lighting challenge this year. Our project near the lake was a huge area and our team took the challenge and not only worked right up till the last second making adjustments, but were able to capture our entire project reflecting in the lakes surface. It was a moment to remember when our project ,which was the last to be unveiled was switched on. Not only did our team win one ,but three awards this year. Thanks to Sterling lighting for their landscape lighting fixtures and to the beautiful venue in Danville and Averett university for once again hosting our annual summit. Coming from my concert and stage lighting background ,I enjoy meeting and collaborating with lighting designers from all over the USA during the lighting summit. We do one thing and excel at it, Landscape Lighting. Do you believe one person can do 5-7 things and be and excel at all those things?  Hardscapes, Landscapes, Mulch, Ponds, Fences, Tree Trimming, oh and we can also do lighting, lol. I see trucks in Luxury neighborhoods daily when out working and laugh to myself, because I see what those guys are installing.

They find the cheapest thinnest fixtures they can purchase,bulbs included and install them for the low price they add onto the 15-30,000 hardscape or landscape project they installed. Sad thing is that the client will have no idea until they are long gone and the year warranty is long gone as well. Some lighting manufacture had them attend a half day class and they are suddenly lighting experts.

Professional landscape lighting involves a well thought out design that the clients can look out of their home and enjoy as well as the lighting can be viewed by neighbors riding by. I have to educate clients every day of the week as to proper landscape lighting designs as so many of these companies stick one light on one tree that is not a good tree to be illuminated.

Trees that look magical at night when illuminated properly with landscape lighting are Crepe Myrtles, Japanese Maples, River Birches, Dogwoods. Most builder trees are not trees that look at all good lit up. Architectural aspects of the home when properly illuminated should be softly illuminated between brick or stone facades and not have lights placed directly under windows which can create a hot spot and a ghoulish effect.

 

I come from a concert and theatrical stage lighting background and see so many horrible lighting jobs that clients paid good money for. It only takes a few minutes of walking or riding around looking at such jobs to make most clients realize the bad lighting that is all around them, including two new things builders are guilty of. permanent holiday lighting and soffit lighting in the homes peaks which creates bright hot spots with horrible glare at night.

You paid alot of money for your forever home and landscaping and you need to educate yourself on the differences in not good and good lighting.

Yes, you can go with the low price leader for any type of home improvements, but I get the phone calls when those systems that are not wired properly or put together cheaply fail and we ,as most companies don’t work on those type systems as its usually just a band aid till the next failure happens.

Value vs low price=  quality small company who does one thing and does it correctly vs a company doing quantity installs for a quick buck to add onto their other project they made their profit on.

    • Embraced eco-friendly solutions in both arenas. Transitioned from old halogen lamps to energy-efficient LEDs in concerts to implementing similar technologies in landscape lighting for sustainability.

    • Ambient & Accent Lighting: Techniques like uplighting and moonlighting, which are not prevalent in concert lighting, offer a gentle glow and highlight the natural beauty of outdoor elements.

Joe did a great job of lighting our house. He’s very nice, talented, and shows up when he says he will. I wanted the lights to accentuate house, not so lit up that it’s like a runway. After driving around neighborhood, our lighting is also ‘softer’ – not so bright and definitely not as white. You don’t think too much about that (at least I didn’t), until you look at everyone else’s. Personally, I think ours look better. It’s nice because he’s the owner and installer.

We recently redid our whole backyard. The final piece was the lighting. We found Joe through an online search, he came out and met with us, heard what we wanted, refined that based on his experience, pulled together a demo for us so we could see what it looked like before we decided, and then, once we gave the go ahead, he did the install. We could not be happier! It looks amazing! On top of doing great work, Joe is also super nice, completely dependable (shows up when he says he will, returns phone calls and texts), listens to what you want (when I didn’t like one of the fixtures he proposed, he found a fixture exactly like what I told him I wanted even though it wasn’t one he normally installed), honest (no surprise charges), fast, and completely committed to giving you a great experience as well as great lighting. Good lighting design and educating my clients in the differences. These are a few examples of Good vs Bad outdoor landscape lighting.  My job as a lighting designer is to help educate my clients all about proper lighting design techniques. It seems I see so many BAD landscape lighting jobs when I ride out of these subdivisions in the evening that I have to call attention to them to help my clients SEE and hopefully understand the difference.

With properly designed and installed outdoor landscape lighting,there are a few things to consider as a lighting designer.

Lumens: lumens is lighting output of a lamp or LED chip

I see many many jobs where the light level is way too much on a homes architecture or on trees or plant material,causing a really bright hot spot on the bottom middle of the object itself.

 

Another thing viewed at night are the wrong color temperature lighting or the wrong width lamp which can create a V pattern going up the walls and architecture of the home.

As a lighting designer I want to create soft illumination on what I light and use a proper spread of illumination to light trees from at least two or more sides to create a portrait with illumination for the client to view thru their windows or doors. Not just a one sided vision that the neighbors can view passing by. The world we live in is not just one dimensional.

I have been blessed with the ability to envision things that are not yet there to create a private backyard sanctuary for my clients to enjoy in the evening hours,to highlight all their favorite things about their residence.

 

Here are a few examples of BAD lighting,Hot spots and not enough lighting to properly illuminate the homes architecture.
