Landscape Lighting for Rock Springs Estates
Rock Springs is one of Greenville’s premier estate communities, on the west side of town within minutes of the ECU Health medical campus. Many homesites run from about an acre and a half to six acres, and on the estate side of the neighborhood every home sits on at least five acres. Mature trees screen many lots from the road, walking and riding trails wind through the community, and listings describe grounds with sculpted boxwoods, rose gardens and brick walks.
That much land is a remarkable canvas for outdoor lighting in Rock Springs. It also needs restraint. On five acres you can’t, and shouldn’t, light it all. The art is choosing the moments that matter and letting the woods stay woods.
Deep Setbacks and the Drive In
When a house sits far back behind a screen of trees, the drive is the opening scene. We’d rather not line it with path lights like a runway. Instead, Joe lights the trunks and understory along the way, so the drive glows from its edges and you move in and out of the dark as you approach. A little moonlighting from high in the canopy spills soft leaf shadows across the pavement, and the house appears last, softly washed rather than floodlit.
- Trunk and canopy lighting along the approach, with darkness between the trees
- Specimen trees lit from several low-output angles instead of one bright fixture
- Garden rooms, boxwoods and brick walks revealed in layers near the house
- Pools, terraces and outbuildings lit as their own scenes
- Wooded buffers and open fields left dark, for privacy and depth
Designed by a Stage Lighting Veteran
Joe Yanulevich spent more than 35 years lighting concert and theatrical stages before he brought that craft to residential landscapes. On a stage, light decides what the audience sees and what stays in shadow, and the dark spaces are what give the lit ones their drama. His work is featured in the book Masters of Landscape Lighting, alongside designers recognized for what the craft can be at its best. On a wooded estate, that means something lit, something dark, then something lit again. Every fixture is warm 2700K, shielded and aimed into the landscape, so the stars, the trails and your neighbors stay part of the evening. Joe explains why in You Can’t Un-See Bad Landscape Lighting.
Bringing Our Eastern North Carolina Work to Rock Springs
Lite Visions is based in Raleigh, and we’ve been designing wooded estate properties in New Bern and Trent Woods, about an hour’s drive from Greenville. Every project starts with a daytime design consultation. Joe walks the grounds with you in daylight to see where the trees, the approach and the views are, and how you use the property. He designs every job himself, and after installation he returns after dark to make the final adjustments to each fixture’s angle and brightness. Lite Visions is locally owned, it isn’t a franchise, and lighting is all we do.
