Landscape Lighting for Star Hill Farm Estates
Star Hill Farm is one of Greenville’s most coveted addresses: a community of custom estates on homesites of about one to five acres, minutes from downtown. Private lanes wind through the neighborhood, and some homesites border the course at Greenville Country Club. Listings describe custom brick homes on beautifully landscaped grounds, many with circular drives, and vacant land here has become scarce.
Two acres is a wonderful canvas for outdoor lighting in Star Hill Farm, and an easy one to get wrong. On a lot this size, the temptation is to light everything. Do that, and an estate starts to look like a ballfield after dark. The goal is the opposite: choose the moments that matter, and let the rest of the land stay quiet.
The Long Approach
When a home sits deep on its lot, the evening starts at the road, not at the front door. A drive can be a dark tunnel, or it can be the opening scene. Instead of lining it with path lights like a runway, Joe prefers to light the trees and plantings along the way, one side and then the other, so the drive glows from its edges and the house reveals itself last. On a circular drive, the pavement is never the focus. You’re on it for a minute, then gone. The trees and beds around it are what frame the arrival.
Specimen Trees and Open Lawns
Estate grounds often hold a few trees that deserve to be the stars of the evening. A specimen oak lit from several soft angles looks three-dimensional, while one floodlight flattens it and throws glare across the lawn. Moonlighting from high in the canopy lets leaf shadows fall across the grass the way real moonlight does. For homes that border the golf course, the course itself should stay dark. We light the edge of your property, so the view from the terrace feels framed and calm, with open darkness beyond.
Designed by a Stage Lighting Veteran
Joe Yanulevich spent more than 35 years lighting concert and theatrical stages before he brought that craft to residential landscapes. On a stage, light decides what the audience sees and what stays in shadow, and the dark spaces are what give the lit ones their drama. His work is featured in the book Masters of Landscape Lighting, alongside designers recognized for what the craft can be at its best. Every fixture is warm 2700K, shielded and aimed down into the landscape rather than up into the sky. Joe explains why in You Can’t Un-See Bad Landscape Lighting.
Bringing Our Eastern North Carolina Work to Star Hill Farm
Lite Visions is based in Raleigh, and we’ve been designing estate properties in New Bern and Trent Woods, about an hour’s drive from Greenville. Every project starts with a daytime design consultation. Joe walks the grounds with you in daylight to see where the trees, the approach and the views are, and how you use the property. He designs every job himself, and after installation he returns after dark to make the final adjustments to each fixture’s angle and brightness. Lite Visions is locally owned, it isn’t a franchise, and lighting is all we do.
