Every Evening Begins With a View

Who is your landscape lighting really for? I spent 35+ years designing lighting for concerts and theaters. One lesson has shaped every landscape project since: always design for the audience.

In landscape lighting, the audience isn’t the people driving past your home. The audience is you.

It’s your family around the kitchen table or relaxing in the great room. It’s a quiet evening on the back porch. Those are the people who experience the landscape every night. That is why every evening begins with a view from inside your home.

Where is the audience?

When I first visit a property, I don’t start by deciding where fixtures go. Instead, I stand inside the home.

  • I look through the windows.
  • I study the outdoor living spaces.
  • I notice what my clients see each evening after sunset.

Those views become the foundation of the entire design. Every project begins with a daytime consultation.

What does designing from the inside out mean?

Some landscape lighting is designed from the curb. It may look impressive to someone driving by. It does much less for the people living there.

I take a different approach. I compose the landscape the way a lighting designer composes a stage.

  • Trees become vertical elements.
  • Gardens become texture.
  • Stone walls create depth.
  • Outdoor living spaces become destinations.

Every fixture serves a purpose, but none should become the center of attention. Our signature look is warm 2700K light, soft and low, with no glare.

How does lighting create a nighttime experience?

Great landscape lighting isn’t about installing more fixtures. It’s about creating emotion: warm light, gentle shadows, depth, balance and comfort.

The best compliment isn’t that someone noticed the lighting. It’s when they say their backyard simply feels different after sunset. That is exactly the goal.

After installation, I return at night to fine-tune each fixture. I check it from inside the home, too.

Does every project start the same way?

It does. That includes homes in North Raleigh, wooded lots near Falls Lake and estates in Wake Forest. I ask one simple question: where is the audience? Because every evening begins with a view from inside your home.
