Every Evening Begins With a View

After spending more than 35 years designing lighting for concerts, theaters, and architecture, I learned one lesson that has shaped every landscape lighting project I’ve designed since.

Always design for the audience.

In landscape lighting, the audience isn’t the people driving past your home.

The audience is you.

It’s your family gathered around the kitchen table, relaxing in the great room, or enjoying a quiet evening on the back porch. Those are the people who experience the landscape every single night.

Every Evening Begins With a View

That’s why every evening begins with a view.

Where Is the Audience?

One of the very first things I do when visiting a property isn’t decide where to place fixtures.

Instead, I stand inside the home.

I look through the windows.

I study the outdoor living spaces.

I pay attention to what my clients see every evening after the sun goes down.

Those views become the foundation of the entire lighting design.

Designing From the Inside Looking Out

Too many landscape lighting systems are designed from the curb.

The result is often bright fixtures, harsh glare, and lighting that looks impressive for someone driving by but does very little for the people living there.

I take a different approach.

I compose the landscape the same way a lighting designer composes a stage.

Trees become vertical elements.

Gardens become texture.

Stone walls create depth.

Outdoor living spaces become destinations.

Every fixture serves a purpose, but none of them should become the center of attention.

Creating a Nighttime Experience

Great landscape lighting isn’t about installing more fixtures.

It’s about creating emotion.

Warm light.

Gentle shadows.

Depth.

Balance.

Comfort.

The best compliment I receive isn’t that someone noticed the lighting.

It’s when they say their backyard simply feels different after sunset.

That’s exactly the goal.

More Than Landscape Lighting

Whether I’m designing for a luxury home in North Raleigh, a wooded property near Falls Lake, an estate in Wake Forest, or a waterfront home in Morehead City or Trent Woods, every project begins exactly the same way.

I ask one simple question.

Where is the audience?

Because every evening begins with a view.

If you’re building a new home, renovating your landscape, or simply want to experience your property in an entirely new way after sunset, I’d love to help you see what’s possible.

LITE VISIONS Landscape Lighting doesn’t simply install fixtures.

We compose nighttime experiences.
