Landscape Lighting for Glenhill’s Private Estates
Glenhill is a gated enclave of just 13 private estates in north Raleigh. A recent listing there describes architecturally significant homes with a sense of European understatement, walls of glass and custom pools, and the community adds privacy with a tall hedge along the street.
Modern architecture asks a lot of landscape lighting. Clean lines show every mistake. A stray hot spot on smooth stone or a glaring fixture beside a glass wall stands out immediately. Done well, though, lighting can make a modern home look like it’s floating in its landscape.
Walls of Glass Need Light Outside
Here’s something many owners of glass-walled homes discover the first winter: after dark, big windows turn into mirrors. With the lights on inside and nothing lit outside, all you see is your own reflection. Landscape lighting fixes that. When the trees, terraces and garden beyond the glass have their own soft light, the windows open back up and the landscape becomes part of the room.
For homes like these, we often consider:
- Layered light beyond the main windows, so the view comes back at night
- Grazing light on stone and textured walls, with no hot spots
- Specimen trees as sculpture, lit from several soft angles
- Pool terraces and balconies lit for evenings, not for glare
- The privacy hedge as a softly lit backdrop, like a stage curtain
Composed Like a Stage Set
Joe Yanulevich spent more than 35 years in concert and theatrical lighting before focusing on landscapes. In the theater, a set is often simple and clean, and the light does the storytelling. He brings that to modern homes: something lit, something dark, then something lit again, with shadows on purpose. A tree’s shadow on a pale wall can be more striking than the tree itself.
His approach is lower lumens and more fixtures, chosen and aimed so you notice the architecture and the garden, not the lights. His work appears in Masters of Landscape Lighting, and he explains the thinking behind it in You Can’t Un-See Bad Landscape Lighting.
Personal Design, From the First Night
Joe designs every job himself, beginning with an after-dark visit to see how the architecture, the glass and the landscape interact. For a home that’s still being built, starting early lets wire and fixture locations be planned with the hardscape and pool, so nothing has to be cut in later. Every fixture is warm, shielded and aimed to keep light out of the sky and off the neighbors.
