Landscape Lighting Design in Maple Ridge Cove, North Raleigh

Landscape Lighting for Maple Ridge Cove

Maple Ridge Cove is a gated community of eleven estate homesites, from just under an acre to about 2.7 acres, that back up to Falls Lake. The community has two connections to the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, and the homes are tucked away from the road and from each other. Seclusion is the whole point here.

That makes lighting a balancing act. You want to enjoy your property at night: the terrace, the pool, the path down toward the woods. But you share the darkness with the lake, the trail and the wildlife that live along it. Good landscape lighting can give you both.

Dark-Sky-Friendly by Design

Most of the bad lighting Joe sees on his night drives comes from fixtures that are simply too bright. They throw glare into the woods, wash the sky, and make a quiet lot feel exposed. Near the lake and the trail, Joe designs the other way: lower-output fixtures, shielded and aimed down into the landscape, with warm color that sits comfortably in the night.

For lots that back to Falls Lake, that usually means:

  • Woodland paths lit softly at ground level, with no bulbs visible from the trail
  • The lake-facing rear elevation lit gently, so it glows from the water without glaring
  • Trees along the shoreline lit for soft reflections, with the water itself left dark
  • Pools and terraces composed as scenes from inside the house
  • Darkness left on purpose between scenes, so the woods keep their mystery

Why a Stage Lighting Background Matters

Joe Yanulevich spent more than 35 years lighting concert and theatrical stages. On a great stage, nothing is lit evenly. Your eye is led from moment to moment, and the dark spaces give the lit ones their drama. A secluded lakeside lot works the same way. A lit path leads toward the woods, the trees frame the view, and the lake stays a deep, quiet backdrop.

It’s also why he prefers more fixtures at lower lumens, with shadows on purpose. The result feels like a well-designed set where you notice the landscape, not the equipment. His work appears in the book Masters of Landscape Lighting, and he explains what to look for in You Can’t Un-See Bad Landscape Lighting.

Designed by Joe, at Night

Every project begins with Joe walking your property after dark. He designs every job himself, and he’s the one who makes the final adjustments once it’s installed. For new homes here, getting involved early lets us run wire before the hardscape goes in and place fixtures around the trees you’re keeping.
