Landscape Lighting for Greywalls at Trego
Greywalls at Trego is a gated community of homes in north Raleigh’s 27614 ZIP code, known for its winding streets, mature trees and wooded surroundings. It’s an established neighborhood, which means the landscapes have grown in and the trees have real size. That’s exactly what makes a property worth lighting.
The name itself brings stone walls to mind, and stone is one of the most rewarding materials to light. Walls, steps, chimneys and patios all come alive when light skims across them at a low angle.
Mature trees are the other great asset of an established neighborhood. A big oak or maple that’s been growing for decades can carry a whole yard after dark, as long as it’s lit with care: several soft fixtures instead of one harsh one, and a few lights high in the branches for moonlit shadows on the lawn.
Outdoor Rooms, Lit for Living
Many homes in established north Raleigh neighborhoods have the kind of outdoor living that’s made for evenings: screened porches, stone patios, fireplaces and fire pits, and gardens that have been tended for years. Too often, all of that goes dark at sunset, or gets lit by a single floodlight on the back of the house.
We’d rather treat each space as a room. Ideas we often bring to properties like these:
- Seat walls and steps lit softly for safety, with the light hidden
- Stone walls and chimneys grazed to show their texture
- Patios and fire pit areas lit low and warm, so conversation feels relaxed
- Mature trees moonlit from above, casting leaf shadows across the lawn
- The view from inside, so the garden becomes part of the room after dark
A Designer, Not a Fixture Seller
Joe Yanulevich spent more than 35 years in concert and theatrical lighting. He starts with the effect, not the fixture count: how the back patio should feel, what you see from the kitchen window, where the eye should land when you pull into the drive. The fixtures are just the tools to get there.
That’s also why he prefers lower lumens and more fixtures, with shadows on purpose. A great Broadway set isn’t lit evenly from front to back, and neither is a great yard. You notice the garden, not the lights. His work appears in Masters of Landscape Lighting, and he explains the difference in You Can’t Un-See Bad Landscape Lighting.
Personal, After-Dark Design
Every project begins with Joe on your property after dark. He designs every job himself and makes the final adjustments in person. Fixtures are warm and shielded, aimed into the landscape rather than into the sky or a neighbor’s windows.
