Landscape Lighting for Shinleaf Estates
Shinleaf Estates takes its name from a native woodland wildflower, which suits it. This new community north of Raleigh, close to Falls Lake, sets fewer than thirty custom homes on wooded lots of about one to nearly two acres. Homes here are being built by a select group of custom builders, and many come with screened porches and fireplaces, lots planned for pools, and a trail that leads down through the trees to a cove on the lake.
Homes like these deserve more than a fixture package. They deserve a lighting designer who treats night as its own season.
Why Exceptional Homes Call for a Lighting Artist
Most outdoor lighting is installed. The best is composed. Joe Yanulevich, who designs every Lite Visions project, came to landscapes after more than 35 years lighting concert tours and theatrical stages, where light is the whole story: it tells the audience where to look, sets the mood, and leaves the right things in shadow. That training is why his gardens feel calm and dimensional instead of bright and flat.
His work is included in the book Masters of Landscape Lighting, which features designers whose projects show what the craft can be. For homeowners, that recognition comes down to something simple: lighting that looks intentional from the street, the porch and every window.
Designed on Your Lot, After Dark
You can’t design night lighting from a site plan in daylight. Joe starts by walking the property with you after sunset, seeing how the woods close in, where the house wants to glow and which views matter from inside. He designs on site, at night, and once the system is installed he comes back after dark to fine-tune each fixture’s angle and brightness himself.
Light That Grows With the Landscape
In a neighborhood this young, the plantings are still finding their shape. A good design looks right on the first night and better in year ten. That might mean:
- Moonlighting from tall trees at the edge of the woods, so soft leaf shadows fall across a new lawn
- Gentle uplight on young specimen trees, with room to adjust as they grow
- A screened porch and fireplace that glow warmly from the yard, without glare on the screens
- Pool and terrace lighting planned with the hardscape, so wiring is in place before the patio is poured
- Low, shielded light along a path toward the lake trail, leaving the woods beyond natural and dark
Everything stays warm in color, aimed down into the landscape, and respectful of the night sky and your neighbors. Shadows are part of the design. For more on why, read You Can’t Un-See Bad Landscape Lighting.
